Becoming a foster family

I had been chatting with a CPS case worker about possibly adopting a sibling group of three. It was looking really good and Jon and I felt after much prayer and thought that those kids where ours. REALLY good. We even talked to Kaylee and Regan about the kids. They were excited about bring their siblings home.

Well their Grandma last second decided that she wanted to adopt them. Which is good. For them. It was hard for us. Really a lot harder that I expected it to be. It really brought back some rough emotions and felt very much like a miscarriage. I was really surprised bay that. But life goes on.

A few weeks later that same case worker called me to see if we would be willing to bring home a foster only sibling group. She knew we were already set up for exactly what these kids needed. She told me they were currently in emergency respite care and separated while CPS tried to find a family to take all three and keep them together. When I got the call I just KNEW these kids needed to come be with us. Jon had a mild panic attack. Going from 2 – 5 kids is not an easy thing.

I said yes, BUT there was a small issue. Our paperwork was still sitting on a judges desk unsigned. For no real reason other that the judge had not signed it yet. So we didn't have our license yet. I called up our licensing agency and chatted with them about the situation. They called the judge who amended (first time foster families are only allowed up to two kids their first year) our license specifically for these three kiddos. Perhaps there was a reason on license was just sitting on that desk after all…

We got the call that we had an amended license and that the kids could come as the kids were halfway to our house. Talk about cutting it close! It's been a hard slow transition having 3 more kiddos in the house. Our newbies are 4yo (the day she came) girl, 14mo boy, baby girl 30 days old the day she came. That's right the babies are 13mos apart in age! So we have a 6, almost 5, just turned 4, 14mo, and 1mo in our home. Girl, boy, girl, boy, girl.

This is everything they arrived with. I've been doing a lot of online shopping to fill in their wardrobe gaps.

All the 4yo's presents from her party she had earlier that day during an office visitation. Not a great way to spend your birthday. We threw her a party that weekend and she ended up have three parties for her 4th birthday. We are really hoping she just remembers this birthday as the year she got three parties….

So far I feel like we are treading water. Just barely. Lots of hard stuff. LOTS. We know these kids are meant to be with us for a time. We also know and have known from the start that even if their parents do pull through for them they are not meant to be our forever kids. It's complicated.

Reset

So we've decided to get Kaylee stated on allergy shots. Her skin is SO bad. Her most recent allergy panel came back with her being allergic to everything that grows in AZ. So she constantly breaking out year round as different things are blooming. Regan is NOT quite as bad so we are holding off on shots. Their allergist wanted them to do a dietary reset in conjunction with their new medication/skin routine to get a jump start on their skin healing up.

So we cut the following for a month: dairy, tree nuts, peanuts, chicken, eggs, corn, soy, wheat, and oats.

People kept asking me "What do you eat?!"

Food. We eat food. Really yummy expensive food. I have kids they wont eat it if it's not good.

So I started taking pictures of some of our meals we eat during allergy reset.

IMG_7409

Rice noodles in a "creamy" butternut squash, bratworst, and peas. This was our "Mac n' Cheese" night. They liked it enough for seconds.

IMG_7423

Ham, potatoes with palm oil for the "butter", and peas.

IMG_7713

Grilled Tilapia, grilled brussel sprouts/green beans and rice.

IMG_7870

Black beans, rice, veggies. My kids don't like dip. So they didn't miss it. Plus we usually do hummus when I can get them to dip veggies….

IMG_5855

This is the before the reset/new meds. Also before we started weekly shots. This was her "normal." Bloody sheets every night from scratching in her sleep. And then being tired from not getting quality sleep. Sad. Just sad.

This is half of their new routine. Our medicine cupboard is FULL of allergy/skin crap. Nightly shower, followed by a 20 min bleach bath (like pool water to prevent infection), steroid cream, olive oil, cereve, Vaseline. All in thick goopy layers. And hand socks. NEVER forget the hand socks.

IMG_6777LOOK at their skin!!!!! Snacking on apple slices and homemade nutella.

IMG_6787

Kabobs and rice rolls.

IMG_6807

Rice crackers, carrots, grapes, ham rolls for lunch today. And such "normal" skin!

IMG_6813

Guacamole, and bean chips for snack. This is about day 15 and I am starting to REALLY drag my feet on getting her shots started. The needing an EpiPen and "her skin will get worse before it gets better" were becoming a MAJOR road block for me. She and Jon bullied me into shots. BULLIED. I just kept hearing the Dr.'s voice telling me it would get worse while looking at her pretty skin and seeing her comfortable for the first time EVER and I just really didn't want the worse part. You know?

IMG_6833

Pork chops, savory rice, and peas. They were on a peas kick this month. I let them pick their dinner veggie.

IMG_6840

Cheeseless, wheat free pizza. Cauliflower crust, and extra pepperoni. It was actually good. A pain in the butt to make, but good.

IMG_6936

Steak fajitas over rice, guacamole, pinto beans.

IMG_7367

Wheat/dairy/egg free blueberry pancakes, corn free syrup, bacon, and o.j.

IMG_7380

Rice flour tortilla burrito. Loaded with beans and salsa.

IMG_7381

"Hamburger" night. Home fries, yellow squash, zucchini, onions, and hamburger patties. They don't always pick peas. 😉

IMG_7392

Homemade chocolates for today's snack. They had fun making the chocolate squares and then eating them.

IMG_7406

Corn/soy free potato chips are HARD to find. And they are pricey. Why? Also hotdogs are tricky. Hebrew National was our former go to. They are out. But Ballpark All Beef Franks are in. So yea!

IMG_7408

And our favorite meal. Rice, chili (homemade), lettuce, tomatoes, onions, with squeezed lie/lemon juice on top. Usually we add cheese, but never for Regan and it's yummy without it.
